The Cyber Kill Chain is a working framework that the multinational company Lockheed-Martin designed to help people understand how CyberSecurity attacks progress from planning to completion. It's intended to help us understand actions we can take to thwart CyberSecurity incidents like hacking.

The Cyber Kill Chain describes seven steps of an attack – Reconnaissance, Weaponisation, Delivery, Exploitation, Installation, Command and Control, and Actions on Objectives. We’ll explain each of these steps in the lessons following.

According to Lockheed-Martin, the foundation concept of the Cyber Kill Chain is that because a CyberSecurity attack, to be successful, has to progress successfully through each of it's steps, we can stop an attack at any of those steps. In other words, we have multiple opportunities to stop attacks - not just one. A lot of people think that once an attack starts, it’s game over – The Cyber Kill Chain turns that on its head and shows us the how of the process and inherent weaknesses of attacks at each of these steps.
